The Mentor | #44 | New Year
Each month, I share 3 things I've read on skills, careers, and personal development.
People like you more when you are working toward something, not when you have it. - Drake
Every turn of the year is an opportunity to turn the page (literally and figuratively). It’s easy to make change, but much harder to sustain change. And many things probably don’t need change at all. Therein lies the real challenge: distinguishing what is ‘good enough’ versus what requires change.
I sense that when many people set New Year’s resolutions, they set their goals too high. They expect so much change, that it is not reasonably possible, and therefore they give up quite quickly.
Perhaps this year the goal should be to set resolutions you know you can achieve, yet have a positive impact. Maybe that sounds weak, but the alternative (setting a high bar that you never get over) is mostly pointless.
So, for 2024: set lower goals, achieve them, and then up your ambition in 2025.
1
Treat everyone you meet as a friend. And, every year, do something you’ve never done.
2
When you get invited to something in the future, ask yourself, ‘Would I do this tomorrow?’
3
Define your own life, get back to basics.
